GSM network and services 2G1723 2006

The two first lecture will introduce GSM and cellular networks. How did it all start and what has the evolution looked like? What systems are used around the world and wich organizations are controling the standards? We start by describing the basics of radio commuincations and the special problems faced in mobile networks.

The third lecture is an over view of all the nodes in the network and wich protocolls that connect them.

Now we are ready to go through the radio interface. We start by looking at the different logical cahannels and then how the physical channels are implemented and assigend to the logical channels.

Once we know how bits are turned into waves we look at how to build a relible connection over the unstable radio layer. In GSM this involves separate steps where we for example start with a 260 bit voice sample and end up with half the content of eight normal bursts (or a total of 456 bits).

Data is data and signals are only signal but voice is different. It starts at a 20 ms sample represented as 2080 bits and ends up as a 260 bit block. The smartest thing is that we also code silence, ... or rather not code silence. We will also go through how encryption is done over the radio interface.

Lecture seven is the signaling protocols, both over the air interface and between nodes in the network.

Lecture eight is all about GPRS and EDGE.

The last lecture is an overview of IMS and a look at how the networks will look in the future.
